Liewe Voormalige Pelgrims
Recently I came across three precious little books which is such a challenge and a blessing to me. The one is a booklet with poems written by Mary Bazelley and Nellie Hulme. It was published by the Japan Evangelistic Band but no date of publication is given.
H.W. Verner writes in the forward that these poems have been given as messages to the authors to comfort christians who are sorely in need of God’s comfort to turn their attention away from the troubles to the One who can give peace and encouragment. “Christ shall be magnified; when tests are multiplying. When doors are closed and God seems out of sight, He has a better chance to lead me safely when I am clinging on in a dark cold night.” This sums up the tone of the book “Christ shall be magnified” The second book “Making many rich” is a compilation of sermons given by Emma Garratt. These messages are simple but very penetrating and challenging and one gets the feeling of the heart of this precious child of God as well as the tone of the messages in those days. How we need it today! The third book “a Sheaf of memories” which is a brief record of the life and labours of Emma Garratt. Again there is no date of publication but this book came to me as a real challenge. Allow me to quote from the foreward by one so esteemed as Paget Wilkes. Paget Wilkes was a great convention speaker and preacher of holiness and he keenly supported the AEB and the Garratts in their work for God in South Africa. He writes: “Emma Garratt has been one of my many friends whose warm and loving interest in the work in Japan was an encouragment over the years. Her large-hearted thought for others, was always a source of inspiration to me and a rebuke to one’s own narrow vision. This made her and her two sisters leave their beautifull Irish home to live in such simple fashion in another continent.” It is indeed the life story of Emma. We never hear much about her but reading this book I realised just how deep her devotion to the Lord and the AEB was. Circumstances have changed but such dedication still speaks to us in the present generation. I believe our younger generation can only benefit from such “tried and proven” material.
.Kruger is ʼn oudstudent.
My navorsing het my geneem deur Kaptein Dobbie se lesings, mnr.
Applications for Glenvar are coming in at this time. Two had been accepted and five application forms were sent to others who profess to be called to Glenvar. Please pray with us that these application forms will turn into students.
We are working on the Captain Dobbie book and hope to have it press ready soon. I need more material on his family background and any material that could be of use.
I end this letter by quoting from Duncan Campbell’s book “The Price and Power of Revival.”: “Jesus promises to empty us and fill us with Himself. His promise is not only power but purity. I would say the peculiar prerogative of the Holy Ghost is to purify and then empower.”
